Mark Devon Jones.

History and statehood[]

Mark Devon Bonneyfoy Kirkland Carriedo Jones (Mark Devon Jones for short) is the state of Mississippi. Originally called Yanaki by the Mound builders of the Oka tribe Mark has been alive much longer than his state hood would suggest. He eventually came to have 5 cultures with in his current day borders, the Natchez, the Yazoo, the Biloxi, The Chickasaw and the largest group the Choctaw. His people traded with like cultures up and down the Mississippi and its tributaries, from as far east as the Carolinas to as far north as the great lakes states. He was especially close with Sakima Embodiment of the Ojibwa homeland and Alabammo, the embodiment of The Alabammoh tribe and his twin brother, who served as a sort of serf under the Chicasaws. These relationships lasted despite his people often having wars with all three.Yanaki's first known European contact was in 1540 by a Spanish explore Hernando De Soto who vaugely claimed the land Yanaki presided over as his own before leaving to continue he quest. Yanaki, thinking that was it, returned to his mother and stayed there, unitl a great plauge began to kill off the people around him. Surprisingly Yankai, considered a god, became Ill and slowly began to fade and change. His mother died in the same plauge, and so when Yankai next awoke he was different, and very alone. He wandered the woods in his young body until he was found by france and taken in. He was given his Christian name (Marc Devon Bonnefoy) by France in 1699, and lived under his roof alongs side Jacques. He was then deeded England (Mark Devon Kirkland) and Spain (Mark Devon Carriedo) simitaniously in 1763, before being fully deeded to Spain in 1779 and finally, through treaties with Spain and The Choctaw nation, given to the US (current name) along with his brother Bobbie. During his time with England and America he was housed with Georgia and South Carolina, and then became his own separate territory in 1798 after his "Brothers" let him have some of his land back. He remained this way until his acceptance into the union. (Except for 74 days during 1810 when his lower regions were captured by Florida.) Mark entered into the union on December 10th 1817 as the 20th state of the union, and a slave state.

In 1831 there began a mass removal of Mark's native people to the "Native" Territory that lasted approximately til 1903 when 300 more Choctaw were convinced to leave. The initial removal was called the Trail of Tears and of the approximately 17,500 Choctaw only 15,000 are believed to have made it to Oklahoma. Those that stayed behind became the "Choctaw tribe of Mississippi" a distinct Culture from the Choctaw of Oklahoma. Mark was left with massive gaps in his memory due to this.

Mark quickly rose in the ranks of the states, and during the time that cotton was king he was the fifth richest state before the war with a slave population of 436,631 ( 55% of the state’s total population in 1860). Mark's people included freedmen, people of color who were either Mistresses of the Plantation owners or their mixed race children but these were rare, with only about a 1000 of them. Mark's laws allowed for these children to have education, inheritance from their fathers and even apprenticeships. Mark himself kept slaves and even seems to have produced a few children by them, chief of which is his son Jackson, though he never seems to have freed his mistress along with the child, instead taking on the child rearing himself.

Mark was a hotbed of States rights and succession during the lead up to the civil war, though there were small pockets of Unionist who also feircely opposed sucession. Mark was the Second to secede from the union on January 9th of 1861, briefly forming the republic of Mississippi before joining the rest of the Cotton states a month later under the confederacy. He made it no secret that he was doing it for the issue of Slavery writing with in his Declaration “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world." 80,000 white Mississippians fought for the Confederacy during the war, 500 for the union. More than 17,000 escaped and freed Mississippian slaves fought for the Union alongside the freedmen of Mississippi.

Mississippi was important during the war, controlling the waterways to supply the confederate army. Several important battles, including but not limited to Vicksburg, occurred in the state.

During reconstruction, Mark had troops stationed within him but aside from small acts of rebellion (he allow a steam boat captain to explode his own boat filled with Union soilders) he accepted them, if a little resentfully. His land, with only 10% developed before the war, saw a boom of purchase by freedman. He elected black representatives; allowed universal suffrage; did away with property qualification for suffrage or office, (Benefiting poor whites as well); created the state’s first public school system; Forbade race discrimination for inheritance and possession of property; and prohibited the limiting of civil rights while traveling.

In the 1870’s the white politicions used various political tactics to run law makers out of office and re-impose laws restricting the rights of African Americans.

When the new constitution of Mississippi came in 1890, Mark came to typify the Deep South, good and bad, with its Jim Crow laws that eventually drove land owning blacks to either leave the state, or to sell the land they owned and became share croppers. The laws also harmed white Mississippians who were too poor to have proper education. The KKK flourished and Lynchings were a common occcurance along with more... brutal forms of punsihment.

Mean while Mississippi culture produced quintessential American Musical traditions such as Gospel music, Jazz, Blues and Rock and roll. Mark also produced writers including William Faulkner. Mark to this day continues to honor these traditions.

During the Civil Rights Movement Mark was center stage, with few of his white leaders supporting the cause of Civil Rights. His policy was that he would proceed to desegriate with "all due haste." When he damned well felt like it. Mississippi resisted all changes, and was one of the last to desegrigate. Most famously he was know for the arrest of the Freedom riders, a group of mixed race students from the north who attempted to take a bus from D.c. to New Orleans sitting both in any place in the bus and also in any part of the bus stops. While the other southern states did little to stop them (as well as little to stop the riots that they caused.) Mark stopped them, took them to court on trumped up charges, and locked them away. Every wave of freedom riders met this fate, and this continued through out the Civil rights movement. Also noteable was the Freedom summer, during which time many northern civil rights workers came down to the south to help those in need. During this time three workers went missing in Mississippi, and were later found dead. This caused the stirr that forced Mississippi to desegragate.

Since then Mississippi has been noted for Conservatism, Improved Civil rights and Increasing industrialization. In the 1990’s Mark allowed riverboat gambling.

Personality and Interest[]

Mark's personality is a hard one to describe. Mark is passionate in all his endeavors. From fighting for his rights to welcoming others into his home. Mark never does anything half way. He throws himself full force into it and sometimes tends to over look important details. Yet as firey as he is Mark rarely shows his true feelings. Always trying to make others happy he often pushing aside his own wants and needs for the sake of others. He prides himself on his hospitality and willingness to please. Even when showing his emotions it is tempered by the need to please and this can cause him to seem like someone who is all bark and no bite.

Extremely spiritual, Mark makes it a point to go to church every Sunday. He enjoys being with his people and hearing their views. On the other hand he has practices that do not agree with the church which makes him touchy in general about the topic. Mark has yet to come to terms with what he has done and often has nightmares about being judged. Mark continues to Struggle with the thoughts of what he has done in the past, his sexuality, and even if a state has an immortal soul.

Mark before the civil war was a charmer, often using his smile to hide a fiery tempered man who would not hesitate to defend what he saw as his from others. Those who did tread to close to what he saw as an insult or an intursion would find Mark would not hesistate to use force to scare them off. Mark saw the talk of war as disturbing, since he cared deeply for the other states but the ending of slavery, and by proxy the woman he loved, pushed him to follow South Carolina into declaring Seccession.

The Civil war was, to Mark, a defining moment He went into the war with dreams of proving himself strong, and helping the others to achieve their goals and keeping slavery alive. Controling the water ways and important supply lines, made Mark feel like he could do anything. He himself saw battles in all the major theaters of the war, though due to a seige on Vicksburgh he could not participate in the Battle of Gettysburgh. Mark was proud of his men and would often go to battle with them rather than standing back with the commander. When he was pinned down Mark was known to walk the lines, pushing his men to vicotry.

The Vicksburg Campaign was a turning point for Mark. Consisting of a series of Battles focused on gaining the fortress city of Vicksburgh for the Union. There were 11 distinct battles spanning a time period of about seven months, beganning on December 26 with the battle of Chicaksaw Bayou ending on July 4th 1863 with the surrender of Vickburgh, just a day after the defeat of Gettysburg.

The two armies were lead by Ulysses S. Grant of the union army and John C. Pemberton, of the Confderate army, formeraly of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mark rode with the confederates.

When the troops first began to manuvere during late december Mark repulsed them easily, though there was one loss in early January and though the fort lost was not a particularly important one it did remove just a little more resistance from Grants Path. When they could go no further through the swamps they attempted a number of plans including but no limited to: building a canal, (being foiled by a random rise in the river) blowing up a dam (stopped by low hanging branches of trees destorying the boats, delaying them long enough for Mark to make a makeshift fort to defend), and going up the Yazoo delta ( Reeds fouling the boats rotars ). When all failed Grant fell back to plan and came out swinging pushing Mark and the army back to vicksburgh where they slowly wore away at Mark's soilders, until disease and starvation forced Mark to give over Vicksburgh to the enemy on July 4th 1863.

Mark continued the rest of the war in Union hands, though he still recieved newspapers denoucing his commander as a Trator.

After the war Mark was depressed and quiet, and the civil right movement made it worse. He began to get a guilt complex, apologizing constantly to everyone, since he supported both sides. During the Freedom summer Mark was caught up in a triple homicide and when it was discovered there had been more murders he stopped talking. Shortly thereafter Mark disconnected himself from the state and disappeared for half a year. When he came back he was himself again, happy and smiling, though obviously very much on the side of the Civil right supporters. Since then he has been a quiet and unassuming state who has a smile for everyone.

Mark is the Poorest of the states, and though he lives in a large Greek revival plantation house he dresses with his status, never really buying new clothes and buying as much as he can in bulk. He works at a catfish farm during the day three times a week to fuel his hobbies, and at night he paints and draws in his secret room.

Mark is considered the “stupidest” state because of his test scores but what he lack in book smarts he makes up for in rich culture and talent as well as common sense. He is able to play a number of instruments and sings very well. He draws and paints though he would never tell any of the others. He enjoys working in his back woods with wood and keeps a small garden where he grows both flowers and vegetables. Mark also cooks and specializes in traditional southern dishes.

Mark keeps a set of detailed diaries starting from when he was under French control. He records his thoughts and feelings and hides them in his room. Only those closest to him have seen them.

Mark is a risk taker and tends to not eat well due to his weak economy. Because of this he is the “Unhealthiest” state and tends to get sick rather easily or cause damage to his body. More likely to take a challenge head on he has managed to get himself in to quite a few tight spots. He relies on the others around him to help which can make him seem weak but he is tough, able to take a beating and move forward.

Mark is proud of few things but he is proud of his past, not the Slavery or the oppression or the racism, but he is proud of being able to stand firm in his beliefs, as well as having moved beyond the parts of his past he is not proud of. Up until a short while ago his state college’s fight song finished with "The south will rise again." He accepts his faults and looks at what is good about his life, most of the time, if called out he tends to be extremely likely to beat himself up.

Appearance[]

Mark is 5 foot 7 inches, of medium build, with sleek muscles. Rust orange hair that when not in its pony tail goes down to his mid back representing the Mississippi. When his hair up in a pony tail it is held back by a single specially made iron shackle. He wears this as penance for his deeds and a reminder never to do it again. He has a large Snake tattooed up his left arm and around his torso representing his people’s earth movement. On his right shoulder is a Bull’s-eye pattern representing the mounds they built. Along his neck and Chest are scars that appear to be bite marks and scratches. On his right shoulder is a large puncture wound near his heart. Lower down there are various bullet wounds and finally on his inner thigh a cross brunt into the skin. Lines shoot down his legs representing his deltas. Marks eyes are tricolored, a ring of Blue, Green and the center a lavender. Mark dresses simply with a flannel shirt over various Tee shirts. He never wears a cap though he hates his hair. Jeans are his best friend, and he refuses to wear any shorts that might show his thighs.

Relationships (please feel free to talk to me if you want to discuss having a section here or what I have written I really do want imput)[]

Mark considers all of the states his "brothers and sisters" and teaches his children to treat them as such but only a select few does he feel are related to him. Respectively he views Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana his "Brothers" and Florida as his “sister”, though he again would never tell them.

Louisiana[]

Marks first brother and one of the only ones he considers himself "truly" related to. He looked up to him and would often follow him around everywhere. He was crushed when he was taken away from France, and while he became surer of himself during his time with England and Spain, Mark missed Jacques deeply. Sometimes Mark would escape from Georgia (his care taker while under england) for a while and try crossing the Mississippi to see him again, but the farthest he ever got was half way across the river on a homemade raft before it broke and he had to swim back. When Jacques joined the union he was overjoyed and since then has formed a close bond with his border buddy (considering that Jacques dislikes his two other bordering states this has not been hard). Mark admires Jacques’ ease and social grace, and sometimes envies his intelligence. Mark is sure to hide his "unmanly" hobbies around the Cajun; afraid he will look down on him and stop speaking to him. The only thing he refuses to hide is his sexuality but he also doesn’t flaunt it around his brother either (Mainly for fear of a bible to the head)

Alabama[]

The one stable element in Marks earliest Memories is Bobbie, who is Marks Twin and thus Marks second Border buddy is the only other state Mark considers himself Blood related to. Since the two of them were often lumped together and passed around from Country to Country Mark came to the conclusion that Bobbie would always be there. Seeing Bobbie as his younger brother he became protective but a bit mean, often doing things like teasing the other or playing a knight and forcing Bobbie to be the princess. Yet when push came to Shove Mark had Bobbies back. Where Mark and Jacques are the type to just hang out, Mark sees his eastern brother as a prime source for fun, often dragging him along on his crazy schemes. He respects though that Bobbie is a bit more partal to hanging out with George, having noticed the crush his blonde brother has early and supporting him. Lately Mark sees little of Bobbie and misses him.

Georgia[]

This and all things Georgia related to be rewritten when a new Georgia comes to be

South Carolina[]

Joesph is Marks hero. Suave, intellegent, and strong, he is everything Mark wants to be. He has hero worshiped him since they met when he was given to England. Mark followed him into the confederacy and is extremely loyal to him. Despite this they are not that close and rarely speak.

Florida[]

Marks only sister Laura met Mark during the time he was jointly owned by spain and England. Mark saw Laura as Spains favorite so he rarely every got in the way of the two, perfering to spend time Harrassing George. What time he did spend with Laura allowed him to develope a little brother complex, following her around and making sure that none of the riff-raff tried to court her (not that he knew what courting was.). During his time fully with Spain the red head grew closer to her but kept his distance, still hurting from loosing George and only staying with her for 20 years making that possible. He is smiliar in additude and values as Laura though and was glad to see her join the confederacy. In current times Mark is still extremely protective, going so far as to denouce Jacques for fear the other is going to hurt his sister, but on the other hand he and Laura don't talk much,

Mark is currently dating:

Taylor Jones (Incarnation of South Missouri)[]

Mark loves to dote on Taylor, always hugging her and cuddling when she is around. He is very romantic and suave to her.

Children (played and unplayed)[]

Mark Devon Jones jr. (played)[]

Mark has a daughter by Wisconsin named Mark junior. She looks 8 years old and Represents the Mississippi bridge in Wisconsin. She looks like Wisconsin, with his skin color and his eyes and build, but has Mark's hair and freckles and a gap tooth grin. She dresses much like her Paw, who assumes her to be Male and buys clothes accordingly. The only hint she is female is that she has a liking for pink like every other girl and the fact that she wears a Pink scarf. Precious to a scary extent she takes after her Dad with her politics and tends to not let her emotions show like her Paw. She is blunt and straightforward but tends to like cuddling her four "Parents" when she can. Close friends with her "Cousin" Jimmy she tends to like to tag along and support him on his crazy endeavors. Lately she is determined to make Jimmy a Governer.

Jackson Chas Freedman Jones.(played)[]

Jackson is Mark's eldest son, representative of his Capital. Jackson is a dark-skinned 16 year old, the only hint of being Mark's child is his red hair which Jack keeps cut short. Jackson is serious, quiet and politically minded. His skin is marred by a large number of small burn scars. He takes on the responsibilities that his Father cannot or will not take on himself. He micromanages the state when ever his father wanders away from his duties and has a blatant dislike for his fathers spacey nature as such. Mark and Jackson have a complex relationship, with plenty of old resentment for Marks actions and past. Chief and newest among them is Mark's coming out of the closet and choice to practice Polygamous relations. Jackson is strictly religious and views his fathers sins as unacceptable and his actions embarrassing for Mississippi. Another big division factor is Mark's refusal to discuss where Jackson came from. It is well known Mark kept slaves and that he was particularly fond of a certain house maid, so Jackson doesn't see what his fathers damage is about admitting to his birth mother being a human slave. Mark in turn will not speak of her and becomes defensive and ornery when Jackson attempts to. As such Jackson rarely speaks to Mark and when it is he keeps it strictly business feeling his father is ashamed of him and his heritage. At the same time he is proud of his father and stands by a majority of his decisions often being the one Mark calls when he is soused, down with heat stroke or just generally lonely. Jackson has never been able to deny his father and will come over for sweet tea and listening to his father speak of old times. Mark has long given up trying to repair the damage and instead just accepts his sons resentment and love in equal shares and moves on.

Jackson is currently Sweet on Laramie Wy.

Vicky Clothilde Alejandrina Jones(played)[]

Marks second oldest child, born shortly after the Seige of Vicksburg. Quiet and pale this girl seems to be fragile but was born in the midst of the war and has the personality of a Rattler: Cool calm and collected but willing to use her fangs if needed. The original Vicksburgh was inhabitied by the French, and bacame a fort under the Spanish rule. During the seige of Vicksburgh Mark and the original incarnation were trapped together. When during the seige the original died, and the new one, current day vicky, was born, though sickly and weak. Mark hid her and kept her close, though when the seige ended on July 4th he had to hand her over to the union army who already had her brother Jackson in their control. Mark as such is incredibly protective of her, to the point he almost disallows her to do anything more than run the city. Unlike her brother she accepts Marks pampering and control with an ounce of resigned humor. She knows in her heart she is daddies little angel and can sometimes play it up to get what she wants, and knows Mark knows this as well. Vicky is extremly afraid of notherns, and will often treat them with quiet distaste bordering on hostility. Protective of her younger siblings she often dismays at Mark Jr's choice of play mate, and more recently Jacksons choice of Girlfriend, but she refuses to control their lives. Just hope she doesn't corner them and give them a talking to about her family.

Béline Médée Vivie Bonnefoy-Jones(unplayed but developed)

Biloxi is Marks Third "child", though not Biologically. Where her adopted sister is quiet relaxed and cultured, Beline is loud, proud and proud to be a Redneck woman. She dresses in jeans and tee shirts, wears baseball caps and even goes muddin' with her Paw (when she isn't fishing hunting or generally bugging the hell out of Jackson). She is not afraid to show who she is and everything is out on the table with her, unlike the rest of her family. She is often seen sporting a cut off shirt and jean shorts, and dirty worn out boots. Beline is close to Jaquces, having been the capital of French Louisana for three years, and part of him up until the 7 year war. She spent most of her time resisting change from her french ways and caused England (and Subsaquently Spain), no end of trouble.

Natchez - (fill in later)

Eric’s song - Vienna Teng - Marks sad song.
Strange how certain the journey
Time unfolds the petals
For our eyes to see
Strange how this journey's hurting
In ways we accept as part of fate's decree
So we just hold on fast
Acknowledge the past
As lessons exquisitely crafted
Painstakingly drafted
To carve ourselves instruments
That play the music of life
For we don't realize
Our faith in the prize
Unless it's been somehow elusive
How swiftly we choose it
The sacred simplicity
Of you at my side

Cattahoochee - Time with Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina

Way down yonder on the chattahoochee
It gets hotter than a hoochie coochie
We laid rubber on the georgie asphalt
We got a little crazy but we never got caught Down by the river on a friday night
A pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight
Talking ’bout cars and dreaming ’bout women
Never had a plan just a livin’ for the minute
Yeah way down yonder on the chattahoochee
Never knew how much that muddy water meant to me
But I learned how to swim and I learned who I was
A lot about livin’ and a litttle ’bout love

6.

Troublemaker - Weezer - Mark during the politics before the Civil war.

I'm a troublemaker
Never been a faker
Doin' things my own way
And never giving up
I'm a troublemaker
Not a double-taker
I don't have the patience to keep it on the up.

7.

Give you hell - The All-American Rejects - Sucession.
And truth be told, I miss you
And truth be told, I'm lying
When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way

8.

Second chance - Mark's troops during the Civil war

Tell my mother,
Tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize
This is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying...
Sometimes goodbye
Is a second chance
Please don't cry
One tear for me
I'm not afraid of
What I have to say
This is my one and
Only voice
So listen close,

9.

Headstrong - Trapt - Civil war 1st part Prior to the turning point.

Circling your, circling your, circling your head,
Contemplating everything you ever said
Now I see the truth, I got doubt
A different motive in your eyes and now I’m out
See you later
I see your fantasy, you want to make it a reality paved in gold
See inside, inside of our heads (yeah)
Well now that’s over
I see your motives inside, decisions to hide
Back off I’ll take you on
Headstrong to take on anyone
I know that you are wrong
Headstrong we’re headstrong
Back off I’ll take you on
Headstrong to take on anyone
I know that you are wrong and this is not where you belong
I can’t give everything away
I won’t give everything away

10.

It’s my life - Bon jovi - Battle of Shiloh

This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks
It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

11.

Stand my ground - With in temptation - Mark 2nd half of the Civil war

I just know there's no escape now
once it's set its eyes on you
but I won't run, have to stare it in the eye
Stand my ground, I won't give in
No more denying, I gotta face it
Won't close my eyes and hide the truth inside
If I don't make it, someone else will
Stand My Ground

13.

The older I get - Skillet - Mark during the reconstruction era

I didn't know then it would hurt like this but I think
The older I get
Maybe I'll get over it
It's been way too long for the times we missed
I can't believe it still hurts like this
The time between
Those cutting words
Built up our defenses never made no sense it just made me hurt
Do you believe
That time heals all wounds

14.

Song of the south - Alabama - Mississippi during the depression

Song, song of the south.
Sweet potato pie and I shut my mouth.
Gone, gone with the wind.
There ain't nobody looking back again.
Cotton on the roadside, cotton in the ditch.
We all picked the cotton but we never got rich.

15.

Animal I have become - Mark during the Civil rights movement

So what if you can see
The darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal, This animal)
I can't escape myself
So many times I've lied
But there's still rage inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

16.

Breaking the Habit - Linkin park - Mark during the freedom summer I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don't know why I instigate
and say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
I know it's not all right
So I'm breaking THE habit
I'm breaking the habit tonight
Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than any time before
I have no options left again

17.

What I’ve done - Linkin park - Mark after the Civil rights movement.

So let mercy come
And wash away
What I've done
I'll face myself
To cross out what I've become
Erase myself
And let go of what I've done
Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands
Of uncertainty

18.

All star - Smash mouth - Mark finding out the test scores.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead
Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

20.

My last bow - Jim Lang - Mark considering how he used to be to what he was.

I once was king

that day is gone.

21.

Time of your life - Green day - Mark looking towards the future.

So take the photographs
And still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in
Good health and good time
Tattoos of memories
And dead skin on trial
For what it's worth
It was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
