Tyler represents the state of [Oregon] in the State-Tan Project.

History[]

As the eldest of the Pacific Northwest territories, Oregon is considered the caretaker and protecter of the other young territories who grouped under his wing during the explorer era.

As a child he was seen as a prize to win, ending up with 5 nations vying to lay claim to Oregon.

When he was an unorganized territory, after being claimed by America by the Oregon Treaty in 1846, he was happily living as he pleased until the tragic event of the Whitman massacre, in the part known as Eastern Washington. The government, having heard of the disgruntled natives, decided that Oregon would come under a government now, and forced him to become a territory one year after the incident.

Oregon disliked his territorial government, refusing to become a state the first three times. He was miserable, stubborn, and disliked anyone who tried to force him to do what they pleased with him. Unfortunately, he grew paranoid that Washington would do the same, and took his anger and frustration out on him. Oregon eventually caved in when Washington grew fed up with him and left with Idaho to become his own territory in 1853.

For the next six years, Oregon tried vainly to get Washington back, but gave up and decided to put all his energies into becoming a state instead. But the government was hesitant in letting him join the union, due to his stubborness from before. But Oregon fought and finally becoming the 33rd state in 1859. Since then, Oregon decided to unleash his revenge by preventing Washington and Idaho from becoming states for nearly 30 years.
In turn, Oregon has had karma bite him in the ass for doing all those things, now overshadowed by Washington. Sometime during their years, they seem to have made up, but it's really unknown unless you ask them.

Currently Oregon has a hatred for outsiders, mainly from south of his borders.

Despite his cheery smiles on the outside nowadays, history will tell you that Oregon was an overall possesive little bastard who had no cares in the world but to gain as much as possible fame though any means. Known to be highly aggravating and had swaggered his way through his days as a new territory to America, he eventually learns years later that his attitude and mean streak bites him back in the ass. Which probably explains why he's so mellow to this day, having experience firsthand that what goes around, comes around.

Shaggy rust colored hair, gray green eyes, a soul patch, stubble and a constantly fading every-other-day tan. Always has an eyebrow cocked up to indicate his disdain for anyone he thinks is more successful than he is.

Washington: Despite his attitude, Oregon still holds guilt over the almost abusive treatment of Washington during their days together as territories. In doing so, he drove away one of the only friends he had during the time, allowing him to realize what a jerk he was later on. Oregon still can't believe that he actually had the balls to steal people from the younger state.

Idaho: She and Oregon weren't on very good terms with one another since Washington had gotten fed up with their 'big brother's' attitude towards them and left with her to become their own territories. They don't hate each other, but are wary of one another since they border each other.

California: There are a few states that firmly believe that Oregon and California have unresolved sexual tension between them. To describe how much Oregon hates his southern neighbor, there's really no way to capure the essence. After all, between his northern and souther neighbors, he gets ignored by everyone.

Alaska: Pretty much Oregon tried to claim ownership over Alaska during the gold rush, but she refused to be under his claim and instead went to Washington because he treated her better than she thought Oregon ever will.

British Columbia: As part of Oregon territory, they both grew up together and were separated by the Treaty. They might have even been married. Neither of them will tell. They're buddies and take the time to drink and smoke pot together.

Wisconsin: Actually admired the cheese state from afar, they have much in common in terms of making beer, cheese, being useless, and being uber failures in life. One could say that Oregon is the 'Wisconsin of the west coast', which gets them to being bros like whoa.

During WWII, Oregon was attacked by a Japanese submarine that was not given returning fire as not to give away the position of military bases, and in Eastern Oregon the only deaths by Japanese balloon bombs were six people, whose deaths were covered up as not to let the Japanese know their plan had worked and to not worry the populace. 1000 bombs were deployed, but only 285 discovered.
The Oregon Highway Division once tried to remove a beached whale in 1970 by blowing it up. A 3x5ft chunk of blubber traveled a quarter mile into the air before crushing the car of a nearby businessman.
Matt Groening, a cartoonist, created "The Simpsons," and initially based it loosely on his early life experiences. Springfield, Oregon is used as a loose basis for the main town of the show, and some characters are also named after streets around Portland, such as Quimby, while some are loosely based off of locally-famous people such as his Civics and Journalism teacher, Mr. Bailey, who taught at Lincoln High School in Portland.
Nearly every year since 1894, University of Oregon and Oregon State University have had "Civil War" football matches. This also accounts for the largest amount of games played with two public same-state universities as "University of _ vs _ State University," at 122 games played.
During the 1840s and 1850s, white Oregonians were generally against slavery, though they were also against living with African Americans or mixed-race Native Americans. This eventually culminated in the first Exclusion Law in 1844, though enforcement was opposed since 1865, eventually being rendered moot with the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1866 (which was later rescinded and only re-ratified in 1973), but still not being rescinded until 1926. The 14th amendment was In 1857, another exclusion law was proposed, this time referring to voting rights, however, as it included the reintroduction of slavery, it was swiftly shot down by the majority of voters.
Oregon was the only free state admitted into the Union with an exclusion clause in its constitution.
The last instance of "racist language" in Oregon law was removed in 2002.
Oregon was one of six states that initially refused to ratify the Fifteenth Amendment, and only ratified it in 1959.
The "Rogue River War" began in 1855 and ended in 1856. It began by natives being worried by their severe mistreatment and abuse by the white settlers and miners, and their calls for protection were ignored by the local government. This resulted in an anonymous letter signed "A Miner" expressing concern over possible retaliation to be sent to the "Sub-Indian Agent" for Southern Oregon, which resulted in the creation of an army and the subsequent massacre of the local Native Americans.
The "Snake War" between settlers encroaching on native lands and the "Snake Indians" was an irregular war fought from 1864-1868, and was started by increasing tensions between settlers and natives, believed to be initially sparked by a Shoshone raid that killed 8 people. The participants were Oregon, Nevada, California, and Idaho Territory on one side, and the Northern Paiute, Bannock, and Western Shoshone bands that lived along the Snake River.
During the Civil War, US troops were removed to fight, while Californian Troops were moved in to replace them. The 1st Oregon Cavalry, 1st Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and Oregon Militia all were created to either help keep the peace or guard various roads and routes.
Portland, Oregon's largest city, is 77.6% white, and the first black federal administrative law judge in the state had swastikas painted on his walkway and toilet paper thrown onto trees in his yard in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In the 1920s, Oregon had the largest Klu Klux Klan chapter west of the Mississippi river, and in 1922, one member was elected Governor of Oregon. The same person was eventually elected to the US House of Representatives from 1932-1942.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Oregon was the most popular destination for a largest skinhead movement in the country at the time, titled the "White Aryan Resistance."
Since 1813, there has been at least a small movement to create an independent Cascadia bioregion, mostly including Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. On November 8th, 2016, a secession referendum was proposed, but was swiftly withdrawn. The movement has seen slow growth since the 2016 Presidential Election.
The Port of Portland contains the only shipping container terminal and deep draft container port in Oregon. It has 4 marine terminals, 3 airports, and manages 5 industrial parks. It is considered a regional government, with nine commissioners, requiring at least one from Multnomah in Washington and at least one from Clackamas in Oregon. Its main exports are grain, automobiles, hay, soda ash, and potash, while its main imports are automobiles, steel, machinery, and mineral bulks.
As of 2016, Oregon has the second-highest percentage of marijuana users, with 19.9% of citizens admitting to using it at least once before.
